Read Luke 23:26-43

Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." (v. 34)

DO WHAT JESUS DID

Imagine the scene when Jesus was hanging on the cross. Many came to watch. They had heard the rumors about Jesus; some may even have heard him preach or laid palm branches in his path as he entered Jerusalem. Others had mocked Jesus and snickered as the scene unfolded.

A couple years ago, I asked high school students what they would do if Jesus was reported to come back to earth, to Portland, Ore. Would they go? I often wonder, as many of them did, if I would be a skeptic or a believer. I can only imagine this is what Jesus saw as he looked out from the cross: half the people were laughing, half were crying.

In Jesus’ humble loving nature, he asks forgiveness for the people who are crucifying him. I believe that forgiveness is one of the hardest things for people to do. But I can’t imagine what my relationship would be like with my best friend if I hadn’t forgiven him the many times he hurt my feelings or if I hadn’t been forgiven the countless times I’ve slipped up.

In a world stricken with violence and hatred, what would happen if our communication improved? What would the world be like if we were to ask for forgiveness and say kind words about each other? Dave Barnes, a Christian music artist, says in his song "Sticks and Stones": "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but the words you say beat the life from me."

So, what can we do in our house, congregation, community, state or world to help alleviate or solve some of the problems we face in our lives? We can turn to Jesus’ words and forgive people, for many times people do not know what they are doing.

Father God, we thank you for this beautiful day you have given us. As we go about our day, we follow your son, Jesus, to forgive those who may have done us wrong. Please be with us as we communicate with others. Give us the grace and peace that Jesus has given us through the cross. In Jesus’ name we pray.
