My Story

If I told you my story, you would hear Hope that wouldn’t let go;
and if I told you my story,  you would hear Love that never gave up;
and if I told you my story you would hear Life, but it wasn’t mine!
If I should speak, then let it be of the grace that is greater than all my sin –
of when justice was served and where mercy wins,  of the kindness of Jesus that draws me in.
To tell you my story, is to tell of him.

If I told you my story, you would hear victory over the enemy;
and if I told you my story, you would hear freedom that was won for me;
and if I told you my story, you would hear Life overcome the grave.
If I should speak, then let it be of the grace that is greater than all my sin,
of when justice was served, and where mercy wins, of the kindness of Jesus that draws me in.
To tell you my story is to tell of him

This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the daylong;
for the grace that is greater than all my sin –
of when justice was served and when mercy wins, of the kindness of Jesus that draws me in.
To tell you my story is to tell of the grace that is greater than all my sin,
of when justice was served and when mercy wins, of the kindness of Jesus that draws me in.
To tell you my story is to tell of him.
This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

Have you ever been asked to tell your story?  Big Daddy Weave’s My Story can be summed up in one line,  “To tell you my story is to tell of him.”

I have never told my story that way. At least not before I was introduced to this song.  My story has always been about me; after all, it is MY story.  At times in my life, my story has been one of fear and desperation.  I like to think the story I tell today is one of joy and gratitude, but I admit there are times when that is forced fiction.  When I first heard My Story, I was struck by the absence of a personal life testimony. We do not learn anything about the authors, Mike Weaver and Jason Ingram . . . or do we? The lyrics speak of hope and love, victory over the enemy, and life overcoming the grave—the story of Jesus.  Read again these words from the song:

“If I should speak, then let it be of the grace that is greater than all my sin, of when
 justice was served and where mercy wins, of the kindness of Jesus that draws me in.

To tell you my story is to tell of him.”

You will notice in the lyrics that this song incorporates Fanny Crosby’s Blessed Assurance:  “This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.”  It seems that Fanny was telling her story the same way—not as an account of what she had done or experienced, but rather as a reflection of the grace and love of Jesus.

When I look back on my life, I realize that the times I have felt fear and desperation were those times when I wasn’t looking to Jesus. I wasn’t allowing Jesus to be my story. In the times I navigated my way through very tough challenges to find joy on the other side, I know that in my heart I was praising my Savior and feeling his amazing grace. When my story is his story, my story is not only one of gratitude but is also filled with joy.

What is your story? Does it reflect the grace and love of Jesus?
