But if Christ lives in you, the Spirit is life for you because you have been put right with God, even though your bodies are going to die because of sin.

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT

The process of aging manifests itself in a variety of ways. As our nine grandchildren have moved from infancy through their teenage years it has been easy to notice how they’ve changed physically, intellectually and emotionally. The changes in our two daughters — now firmly adults, wives and mothers in their 30s — have slowed down. Still, I must smile when I hear one of them tell me that they’re “getting old” due to some physical discomfort (pain in their back, a sore knee, etc.) or how they feel out of touch with one of their children.

My 98-year-old father is at the other end of the age spectrum. While he is still very clear-minded and intellectually strong, in the last few years his physical abilities have declined, and he needs a wheelchair to get around. He would like to turn back the clock and be able to walk unaided again, but that is very unlikely.

What about me? In the past year I retired, turned 65 and moved to Wichita from Indiana, which have all been major changes. My physical health continues to be good, but I’ve found that I’m spending more time with doctor’s visits and managing a couple of mild chronic conditions that have arisen in recent years. All the above have led me to think about my own mortality and how I want to spend my time and energy in the remaining years of my life.

I’m a person who likes to plan things ahead of time (just ask my wife). So, I must admit that not having my future years planned out makes me uncomfortable. I take great comfort in knowing that my long-term future is certain. Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection (which has put me right with God), even though I will die someday my long-term future will be spent with the Lord in heaven. What’s that going to be like? The Bible doesn’t have much to say about it. How shall I spend today, tomorrow and every day while still here on earth? Seeking the guidance of the Spirit that is within me to become more and more like Jesus.

Jesus, my Lord and Savior, you gave up everything on the cross so that all people might have eternal life with you. Guide me through your Spirit to live each day for you. Amen
