Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only
speak the word and my servant will be healed. (v. 8)
HUMILITY AND FAITH
The man who speaks these
words exhibits two traits that we would do well to copy. First, he is
humble. Second, he has faith.
He is a Roman centurion, the commander of a hundred Roman
soldiers and a man of considerable importance in a land occupied by the Roman
army. He is accustomed to being obeyed without question, but he recognizes his
own helplessness in this case. He has heard of, and perhaps has seen himself,
some of the miracles of Jesus. And he believes that his servant can be healed.
Jesus is impressed with the centurion’s faith and tells him that the servant
will be healed within the hour.
What lesson can I learn from this story? That, by myself, I am
helpless against the world? That I must have faith? That I have only
to come to Jesus just as I am? The answer, of course, is yes.
Heavenly Father, help me to come to you in humility and with
faith.
If I can do this, I know that I will be healed. I ask this in
the name of your son, Jesus Christ.
