Luke 1:37

For nothing will be impossible with God.

IMPOSSIBLE TASKS

This verse comes to mind when I think of service projects for the Boy Scouts. One service project in particular comes to mind. We were helping another Boy Scout with his Eagle Scout project.

He had decided to help with an expansion at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Our job was to lay down newspaper and then cover it with mulch. When we got to the zoo to start the project, the mulch was piled up like a mountain. There were so many newspapers, I swear they went back to 1881. The task seemed impossible. The work was very repetitive and boring. I thought there was no way we would ever get all of this done.

But with time, we started to have fun with the job. We joked and laughed as we laid down the paper and shoveled the mulch. We all seemed to pull together. When I looked around at my friends’ faces, they were happy — well mostly — and there was light in their eyes. The impossible task didn’t seem so impossible as we worked together.

After several hours of work, we looked around. The pile of mulch was much smaller and the newspapers only dated back to the 1990s. The task didn’t seem so large anymore. We didn’t actually finish that day, but we felt so much closer than at the beginning. We knew that it was no longer an impossible task.

I know that in that project, God was there to guide us as we helped others and our community. He brought us together to complete a task — and to show us that nothing is impossible.

Dear God, thank you for letting me know that everything is possible with you. Amen
