“Refocus-Recommit- Reach Out”
The month of June marks a tremendous milestone for
Reformation Lutheran Church; the completion of a three year campaign,
called “Refocus-Recommit- Reach Out” fondly known as RRR, to reduce the
mortgage indebtedness of our church. Many members of our congregation were
involved in the start-up of this campaign over three years ago with the
leadership of KAIROS.
The challenge of reducing Reformation’s mortgage was no
easy task but with the culmination of many volunteers and their talents
along with the generosity of our congregation, the campaign was a great
success.
Reformation’s mortgage at the start of the campaign was
$ 1, 104,047 with a monthly payment of $ 9,090. On April 30, 2004, the
mortgage outstanding is $278,614 with a monthly payment of $ 3,004. !!
Thank you to the members of our congregation for their
contributions that made this campaign successful. A special thank you goes
out to Marjorie Bender for diligently tracking and communicating financial
updates since the onset of the campaign. It would be difficult to name
each and every person that was involved in some way with this effort,
since most of the congregation, at some point, donated their time, talent
and/or financial support. The RRR Campaign is a great example of what can
be accomplished with a prayerful mind and generous heart. Thank you for
supporting this effort over the last three years.
Dottie Caplan and Lotus Gerards, co-coordinators of RRR.
Plan to attend Reformation’s talent show “Make a Joyful
Noise” on Sunday, June 6. The evening will begin with a potluck dinner at
6:00 p.m. followed by the program at 7:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for
our members to share their talents in a relaxed time of fellowship. Bring
a dish to share and your table service. Guests are welcome, too!

I would like to express my thanks to all of you who
said prayers for my sister, Pearl Pike, who lived in a nursing home in
Pipestone, Minn. She had lung cancer and died April 22. This has been a
very sad time for our family. I appreciate the cards I received and your
call, Pastor Hallstrom.
May God Bless you all,

From Our Graduate Seminarian...
Dear Reformation Friends,
Greetings from Ann Arbor! Some time has passed since I last wrote to
you. This congregation has been in a pastoral vacancy since January. There
is a part-time interim pastor who shares the pastoral responsibilities
with me here, but for the most part I have been the administrative pastor
during this time. Due to the circumstances surrounding all the extra work
and experience during this time and because the students have graduated
and for the most part have dispersed over the summer , the seminary has
given me what they call the “9 month Internship option.” This is an
opportunity to get full credit for Internship after serving as an Intern
for a nine month period. I have accepted that option and so will complete
my time here at Lord of Light on May 30. It has been a rewarding
experience in many ways and I look forward to sharing more with you about
it in the months to come. I hope to be in the Wichita area for some time
this summer and hope to make a visit to Reformation to see and talk with
you all. Thank you for your personal and financial support during this
important year in my candidacy process. I will keep you informed on where
I go from here.
Peace in Christ,
Laura Ulicky-Weerts
This summer Zack Zimmerman, son of Mel and Pam Adams, will be taking an
unusual summer trip. He’ll be joining 70 other people from the Pi Kappa
Phi fraternity on the Journey of Hope. The Journey of Hope is a 3,900 mile
bike trip from San Francisco to Washington DC. The purpose of the trip is
to raise awareness and money on behalf of those with disabilities. During
the 64 day trek, the teams will stop in various cities to visit local
organizations that help serve the disabled. They will participate in
events such as puppet shows and wheel chair basketball.
Zack has raised $3,500 so far to benefit Pi Kappa Phi’s national
non-profit philanthropy, Push America. The money will be used for funding
for camps for disabled children and in the construction of handicapped
accessible facilities.

Community Ministries
Local Community
Yellow Bag Food Ministry - The “Food of the Month” for June is
tuna. Thank you for bringing jars of peanut butter last month.
Watch for grocery store ads for tuna bargains. Just think how many lunches
or dinners could be prepared if each person brought just one can of tuna
this month! All other non-perishable food donations are always welcome.
Habitat for Humanity - Plans are moving along for a “Lutheran
Build” home to be part of a Habitat “Blitz Build” in September
with completion by October 2. Look for a volunteer sign up opportunity in
June. Anyone can volunteer. All levels of skill will be needed. Also,
Lutheran congregations will be asked to help match the $20,000 Thrivent
grant that has been awarded for this home.
The future homeowner of the “Lutheran Build” home will provide hours of
sweat equity for their home and then join the company of other mortgage
payers! This is an exciting project to help someone own their own home. It
is also a great chance for fellowship with fellow members of Reformation
as well as with members of other Lutheran congregations.
Global Community
Fair trade Coffee - We hope that you enjoyed the Fair Trade coffee
on Sundays in May as we tried to find a strength of brew that would be
enjoyed by the most people. This month, plan to order one of a variety of
blends, decaffeinated as well as regular, for your home use. You might
want to try some Fair Trade cocoa mix also. There is some information on
the kiosk bulletin board about what our purchase of Fair Trade commodities
means for coffee and cocoa growers.

Best Times of Life, Reformation’s fellowship group for those 55
years and over, will meet Monday, June 14, at noon in the Parish Hall.
Carolyn Harrison of Kansas Health Ethics will be the speaker. Her
presentation, “Beginning to a Better Ending,” will give you tools to begin
conversations with your family members about end of life issues and life
sustaining treatment and ways to express your wishes. Bring a covered dish
to share, your table service and call Pauline, 942-4885, or Betty,
682-2030, saying you will be there, so the hosts know how many tables to
prepare.

successful VBS. Thank you.
Heartland SHARE
What is Heartland SHARE and why did we bring it to
Reformation? The SHARE program was begun in California by Carl Shelton. He
wanted to begin a food program that was non-charity, non-government and
self-sustaining with the emphasis of “People Helping People.” It was
brought to Kansas in 1991. Everyone is eligible to participate in
Heartland SHARE. The only requirement is to complete 2 hours of volunteer
service for each SHARE package purchased. The program is based on the
desire to help others, while stretching you own food dollars.
We began this project at Reformation for several
reasons including the opportunity to reach out in our community, encourage
volunteerism, socialization and to provide a service. The youth will be
using this opportunity as a service project each month. The high school
and middle school youth will alternate monthly in helping with the
distribution. Our first goal is to become a pallet site, where we have al
least 30 shares purchased each month. The second goal is then to become a
truck stop site where the food (minimum of 100 shares) is delivered
directly to our door. For more information you may contact Michon,
634-0586, check out the Heartland SHARE bulletin board in the Parish Hall
or visit their website at www.heartlandshare.com. Word of mouth is the
best form of advertisement, so please tell others!
