Thrivent Match Benefits High School Youth

A check in the amount of $431.00 was received from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans in a match for monies received from a freewill offering taken at the Easter breakfast. This will directly benefit the high school youth who will be attending the National Youth Gathering in Atlanta, Georgia, in mid-July.

From Our Graduate Seminarian . . .

My great thanks and appreciation is extended to the members of Reformation for your generous Lenten offerings on my behalf. The funds have been applied toward the last of my expenses here at LSTC. I have also recently received the news that my Internship assignment for next year will be at Lord of Light Lutheran Church and Campus Ministry in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Your continued prayers as I begin this new ministry endeavor would be appreciated.

The Local Benevolence Ministry Team determines which organizations will receive this support. Many of these organizations are also ones that the congregation and/or individual members support with the gift of time. The 2003 budget includes $6,300 for Local Benevolence, and it is being distributed as follows:

  • United Methodist Urban Ministry - $ 800.
  • Habitat for Humanity - 500.
  • Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice - 400.
  • Women’s Crisis Center/Safe House - 275.
  • Inter-Faith Inn - 425.
  • Episcopal Social Services at Venture House - 200.
  • Meals on Wheels - 375.
  • Good Samaritan Clinic - 625.
  • The Lord’s Diner - 500.
  • Mennonite Housing - 500.

Relay for Life Event Planned

RELAY FOR LIFE is a team effort to raise awareness of cancer in our community and a way to raise money for the American Cancer Society to (1) fund research to find a cure, (2) help prevent cancer through education, (3) support legislation to reduce cancer’s impact, and (4) assist cancer patients and their families. The RELAY itself is a 12-hour overnight event. Each team has 8 to 15 members, of which one must be walking at all times during that 12-hour period.

Hunter, Heather, Steve & Barbara Borg and Ron & Carol Ott are part of a team that will be participating in the RELAY FOR LIFE on June 27 & 28. Other team members are Janice Steffen, Julie & Nate Regier, and Sara & Freemont Regier. The first lap of the relay at 7:00 p.m. honors all of the survivors. At 10:00 p.m. luminaries that have been purchased in honor or memory of a cancer patient are lit.

More than just a fund-raiser, the RELAY FOR LIFE brings our community together to celebrate those who have survived cancer . . . and to remember those who have not. Look for one of the Borgs or Otts in the narthex after services on June 15 if you wish to make a donation for the RELAY or to purchase a luminary at $10.00 each.

You Are Invited

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 11215 W. 13th N., will hold a Potluck Dinner on Tuesday, June 10, at 6:00 p.m., with Rev. Manfred Brockmann as special guest. Rev. Brockmann serves a parish in Vladivostok, Russia, and will be a "Companion Synod" guest speaker at our Synod Assembly. You are invited to come and learn about our Companion Synod in Russia. Please bring a potluck dish to share. Tableware and beverages will be provided. For more information, call Pastor Joan Swander, 722-5473.

S.C.U.B.A.

(Super Cool Undersea Bible Adventure)

Grab your goggles and your swim fins and get ready to dive into Vacation Bible School. This summer’s theme is S.C.U.B.A. (Super Cool Undersea Bible Adventure). VBS is scheduled to take place Sunday through Thursday, July 27-31, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Watch for details on registration.

We are looking for swimmers and non-swimmers from the ages of 3 years through 5th grade (as of next fall) to join us for this undersea adventure. There will be lots of singing, games, skits, Bible adventures, and of course, treats. Come join us for plenty of fun and fellowship.

We are also looking for volunteers. If your child will be attending VBS, plan to stay and help. If you don’t have a child in VBS, plan to come help and experience all the fun. There are several opportunities that anyone can choose to help in. We have no age limits for volunteers. We need singers, actors, chefs, secretaries, fitness experts, and teachers—just to name a few. Come experience S.C.U.B.A. with our children at Reformation.

If you are interested in getting involved in all the fun, please call Katie Johnson, director, or her secretary, Sheryl Johnson at 733-9830. Take the plunge and volunteer your time and talent, you won’t regret it. A list of needed supplies will be printed at a later date, so be watching for it.
