From the Pastor

"'Go and tell his disciples and Peter that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.'" Mark 16:7

"So they [the women] went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid." Mark 16:8

Or "And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest." Luke 24:1-12

The first Easter: What happened next? Which Gospel is right? Did the women keep silent in fear and astonishment and tell no one what happened? Or did they tell all this to everyone? They saw the signs of the risen Christ, met him along the road to Emmaus, encountered him in the locked room, shared breakfast with him on the shore, and shared the Good News with the world. Luke (and Matthew and John) must be right - because we have come to know and to believe. Easter Day 2002. We are inspired with glorious music, festival celebrations, hope-filled words. Children enjoy baskets of goodies and bunnies. Signs of Easter.

Easter is one beautiful day . . . and more. Easter is a season of 50 days filled with signs of God's presence and new life emerging in the world around us. Easter is remembering, experiencing, celebrating resurrection life every Sunday of the year. (We worship on Sundays, signifying the Day of the Resurrection of our Lord.)

Easter is a way of life . . . seeing God's presence in the people and places around us, as the disciples saw Jesus with them . . . letting everyone know our joy and hope . . . helping others, our neighbors, our world, experience the forgiveness, peace, and new life that Christ brings.

Signs of Easter in our congregation: babies and children baptized, children preparing for first Holy Communion, people of all ages uniting as members of our congregation, and bright blue banners* with the dove of the Spirit proclaiming "Grace" and "Peace" to all who pass this way. Signs of Easter.

Signs of Easter in the world of every day: volunteers wielding hammers and scrapers for Repair Affair, our yellow bags of food going to feed hungry neighbors, our River Festival worship service on Mothers’ Day, courageous citizens who stand and speak against racism and other injustices, and countless acts of kindness and caring for friends, neighbors, co-workers, and even strangers. Signs of Easter.

It’s Easter! Christ is risen! Let’s share this good news with "all the rest."

New Adult Sunday School Class To Be Offered in April

Adult Education on Sunday mornings in April, at 9:45 a.m., will feature "Renewal of Faith - Basics of Our Beliefs." Pastor Sally and others will lead these one-hour sessions. This will be a good time for long-time Lutherans, newcomers to the church, and anyone interested to get an "up-date" on whatever you might have learned in confirmation class in the past and may see with different eyes as adults. Come with questions-and come to share your experiences as well. We especially hope that new members will be present. This is a good time to get acquainted with the people and ministries of Reformation. No sign-up--just bring your coffee cup and come when you can.

To my Reformation family:

Thank you for all your prayers, calls, and cards during my mother’s illness and upon her death. A special thank you to my fellow Stephen Ministers (active and retired) for their unconditional support.

Mom always enjoyed her visits to Reformation; I’m blessed that she was able to get to know some of you. I know she appreciated all of the acts of kindness shown to both of us during her illness.

In Christian Love, Marla Schmale

As those classes conclude, we are grateful for the wealth of information and faith-filled perspectives that Lynn, Dallas, and Ben have shared. Thanks, too, to participants, who bring such lively discussion and ideas as well.

Lenten Appreciation

Thank you to all those who have made our Lenten opportunities so interesting and meaningful. . . to Wil Johnson for creating mini-dramas; Gene Bowers for sets; to actors Suzanne Koch, Tim Meyer, Sara Muse, Jeff Johnson, Greg Keith, Sarah Keith, Geoff Pool, Judy McDiffett, Jeff Larma, and Wil Johnson; to Amy Keith for singing; to Eva Whetstone and Carolyn Amend for music; to Shirley Metz and all who prepared luncheons; Eugenia Yau, Parish Choir, Bell Choir, Youth Bell Choir; Nina Kindt and LOGOS singers; many, many readers, worship assistants, ushers, acolytes, and Altar Guild; office volunteers and Ruth Koepsel and Becky Deckard for countless acts of preparation.

Help Requested for Newborn

A baby and her family need our help. Lexi Rose Wellborn, daughter of Matt and Wendy Wellborn, was born February 22 with heart defects and other health difficulties that require surgery in Ann Arbor, MI, and will require extensive future care. Wendy works with our member, Helen Silcott. Reformation’s Good Samaritan Fund is helping with $100. We invite additional contributions, which may be made to the Lexi Rose Wellborn Benefit account at any Intrust Bank.

Pastor Sally will lead the service, and Reformation’s choir will provide special music and lead those who attend in singing familiar hymns. We hope that again we will have the very nice weather for this service that we have had for the past few years.

Prayer Vigil Planned

National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 2. Many of you participated in the prayer vigil at our Meditation Garden last year and reported that it was a very good experience. Because of the favorable feedback, a prayer vigil will be held again this year on May 2, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Forms will be provided for prayer requests from the congregation, starting April 14. Again this year, we are hoping to use the Meditation Garden, weather permitting. However, the church will be open for those who prefer to use it.

So that there will be someone praying continuously for the full 12 hours, you are invited to sign up on the schedule in the narthex for a designated 15-minute period during the prayer vigil. Those of you who have time constrictions because of your work, consider leaving home 20 minutes early and stopping to pray on your way to work, or spend part of your lunch hour at the Meditation Garden praying, or stop on your way home. If your day is less structured, pick a time when others may be on the job.

Forty-eight people will be needed to fill each slot of the 12-hours-won’t you be one of them? Don’t say you can’t come because someone else has signed up for the only time you are available. More than one can come at the same time. Your participation is important!

Repair Affair

The annual Repair Affair is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This Mennonite Housing event gives our congregation an opportunity to help improve the lives of elderly and low-income families in our community. Volunteers are needed to repair porches, storm windows, scrape paint to prepare houses for painting in the fall, maybe do some painting now, or install a wheelchair ramp. If you are age 16 or older, look for sign-up sheets in the narthex to volunteer your assistance and really make a difference.

Health Ministry Team Begins Work at Reformation

The Health Ministry Team met for the first time on Monday, March 18. Members attending included: Mark Dickerson; Barb Lee; Susan Martin; Jette Mortensen; Sandy Muse; Bob Norton; and coordinator, Lynn Schriever.

The Health Ministry Team is responsible for the coordination of the Parish Nurses with the congregation and the ministry staff, and is accountable to the Ministry of Sending. The mission of Health Ministry encourages physical, emotional, and spiritual health of individuals as well as their social well-being in context of their relationship to God, family, and neighbor. The program is rooted in the mission of the church, which reclaims the Scriptures to go out and preach the kingdom of God and to heal, to recognize God’s desire that we achieve abundant life, and to reaffirm and support the journey toward wholeness. Through the Parish Nurse program, the congregation seeks to develop creative ways of addressing needs and identifying resources to nurture health, wellness, and healing. This Health Ministry strengthens the congregation and its community and enables congregates to focus on serving God by serving others.

The Health Ministry Team remains open to additional members. If you wish to be a part of this NEW team, please contact Lynn Schriever at 687-3455. Watch your church bulletins and future Re-Focus publications for further information on this NEW team.

Augustana Heritage Association

Gathering ‘02 Lindsborg

Members and friends of the Augustana Heritage Association, up to 600 persons, are going to Lindsborg for the organization’s biennial national Gathering ‘02, Friday through Sunday, June 21-23. All are invited.

Augustana Lutheran Church (Synod) was founded as a U.S.A. national church body in 1860 by Swedish-American immigrants, and through church mergers is now one of the roots of the ELCA. In the early 1870's, Swedish pioneers of the Kansas Smoky Valley in central Kansas became extremely active in the life and work of Augustana. In Lindsborg several education and social ministry institutions were founded-including Bethany College and Bethany Home.

Augustana Heritage Association was organized in 1998 at Chautauqua, New York, "to define, promote, and perpetuate the heritage of the Augustana Lutheran Church." Relationships are being developed with the Church of Sweden, the Swedish government, and Swedish archives, universities, other groups in Sweden which are interested in Swedish-American heritage.

Information about the A.H.A. Gathering ‘02 may be directed to Bethany College office of special events and summer programs. Information about other A.H.A. programs and national activities may be directed to Augustana Heritage Association, 1100 East 55th Street, Chicago, IL 60615-5199; telephone 773-256-0712; fax 773-256-0782.

First Communion Class

A class for preparation for First Holy Communion will be offered on Saturday, May 11, 9 -11:30 a.m., at church. Children, youth, and adults who have not participated in this preparation are invited. At Reformation there is not a minimum age for first receiving Holy Communion; it is at the prayerful discretion of parents, pastor, and person receiving. Parents are asked to attend the class along with their child or youth. First Holy Communion will be received in worship on Sunday, May 12 (or another time, if needed). Please let Pastor Sally know if you and your child would like to take part.

Church Golf Outing Sunday, April 21

Come and join other Reformation golfers of every skill level for fun at Echo Hills Golf Club. Jack Metz and Craig Stallwitz are co-chairing the event hosted by Golfers for God. "To those who claim there is no such thing as a free lunch," says Metz, "we’ll prove otherwise. Bratwursts hot from the grill will be served beginning at 1:00 p.m. Our tee times begin at 1:30." Lunch is free, and Echo Hills is offering Reformation golfers a special greens fee of $14, payable in advance. Riding carts can be rented from the pro shop.

Echo Hills is a golfer-friendly compact layout located adjacent to the 53rd Street exit from I-135 north. The format for play is for everyone to hit a tee shot, then select the best shot. All players then make their second shot from the location of the tee shot selected, and play their own ball into the hole. Each player’s tee shot must be selected at least two times. The best two scores are combined for the team total on each hole. But scores are not the most important measure of the day: the heart of the idea is to have lots of fun!

Prizes will be offered for men and women based on longest drive, closest to the pin, and longest putt made.

A sign-up table will be staffed by Golfers for God members in the narthex on Sundays April 7 & 14. The greens fee must be paid by the 14th to confirm your reservation. Pairings and tee times will be posted in the narthex on the Sunday morning of the event.

Note: The date for this event in the Church Directory is not correct.

From the Seminary . . .

In Christ there is a new creation, the old is gone, the new has come! This sentiment will surely be reflected in the Resurrection celebration this Easter Sunday. Through our Lenten journey preceding this event we observed the movement from the denial, to the scorn, and finally to the cross itself, leaving us feeling desolate, alone, pained. And yet, after a moment in time, the sun arose in the distance, highlighting the angels, the women, and yes, the empty tomb! Hope was resurrected in the Christ event that Easter morning.

We, too, often experience cycles in life as reflected in our Lord's story. There are times when we feel betrayed by our friends and family. There are moments when we are shamed and, literally or figuratively, spat upon. Our very spirit may cry out in an ultimate sense of abandonment, begging the question, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" At these moments we are left wondering and waiting for that ray of light which will lift us out of this ultimate place of loneliness or despair. But thanks be to God, for God has come to us in Christ Jesus to free us from the bondage of this world! It is in this power of the resurrection that we can move from mourning into dancing.

In order for you to better embrace this reality, I would encourage you to do two things (a type of devotion of sorts). First, reflect on the cycle of your personal life over the past year. What were your stations of the cross? What pivotal time, strategy, or event moved you through the three days of being in "God's waiting room" (as I like to call it), to the vision of the angels (hope), to new life as reflected in the Good News? Then, take a moment to reflect on how things are for you today. What, if anything, can you learn from your previous cycle in life that can help you cope, keep you centered, or allow you to rejoice in the place you find yourself today? What truth kept you going through every twist and turn of your personal journey? I encourage you to think on these things and embrace God's gifts of insight and ongoing revelation, given to help you grow and prosper in your daily life. Finally, remember and embrace Jesus' comforting words, "Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the age."

May God create in you a never-ending spirit of newness and strength and perseverance as you abide in the reality of the Good News in Jesus Christ our Lord!

In Him, Laura Ulicky-Weerts

Lenten Devotional’s Reach Extends Far From Wichita

"One in Christ," the 11th edition of Reformation’s booklet of Lenten devotions written by members and friends of the congregation, spreads the Good News of Jesus farther and wider than you may know.

All members of the congregation, including those who are not able to worship with us, receive the booklet in printed form. The printed version is also distributed to area clergy, who may share it with their congregations if they wish. In addition, copies are distributed to various nursing homes in Wichita. Nearly 500 printed copies have been sent or delivered.

More striking than the number of printed copies in circulation, though, is the number of electronic copies that have made their way around the world. Webmaster Mark Yeskie reports that this year’s devotional has 2,213 e-mail subscribers in 14 different countries. We do not know how many different states in the U.S. are represented on the e-mail list, since e-mail addresses do not reveal the receiver’s location if he or she is within the United States. We do suspect the reach within this country is far greater than the subscriber list.

One of our contributors, Jerry Whetstone, received an e-mail from a reader in Charleston, SC. She thanked him for his meditation and then said she forwarded each day’s Lenten message to friends and relatives in 12 other cities who are not on our e-mail subscription list.

How many people are touched by our Lenten devotional book? No one knows for sure. But as Jerry put it, "Maybe we can spread the Gospel to all corners of the world. Maybe?"

Summer Housing Needed

Karen Ullestad, a student at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC, needs a home in Wichita this summer while she participates in Clinical Pastoral Education at Wesley Medical Center. Karen lived in Salina while her father was pastor there at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She is age 46, non-smoker, and needs a room or could "house-sit" from June 10 - August 16. For more information, please see Pastor Sally Fahrenthold.

It's Time to Think about Softball!

Have you missed the opportunity to play softball as part of a co-ed church-league team? We would love to hear from you! Church league play begins on May 13 and runs through July 1 (seven weeks). We would do a double-header on Monday nights, with games either at 6:15 and 7:15, or 8:15 and 9:15. You don't have to be a stand-out player (think recreational here); all we ask is that you come to have fun and enjoy good fellowship. Even if you can't play every game but would be interested in playing when you can, let me know. Please contact Jill Pletcher, 684-1573 if you're interested or if you have questions. Play ball!

Photo Directory

As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration, Reformation congregation will publish a new photo directory. Included in this directory, in addition to photographs of each Reformation household, will be a number of special anniversary pages. The dates for photo sessions have been scheduled, so please mark them on your summer calendars now. These dates are: Friday, June 7 (3 - 9:30 p.m.); Saturday, June 8 (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.); Monday,

June 17 (3 - 9:30 p.m.); Tuesday, June 18 (3 - 9:30 p.m.); Wednesday, June 19 (3 - 9:30 p.m.). All photos will be taken at the church.

This is a project which requires help in organization and scheduling. Specific duties fall into two major areas: 1) Volunteers to make phone calls to those families who do not sign up for appointments, and 2) Volunteers to provide clerical support to the photographer during the days and hours of picture-taking. Olan Mills will once again be our photographer, and their representative will provide us with training and materials to successfully complete this project. An information/training meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, April 11, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the church. If you would be willing to help with this project, please contact Ruth Koepsel in the church office. Every Reformation family will want to be included in this special directory.
