RE-FOCUS
A Publication of Reformation Lutheran Church
Volume 20 September 2000 Number 9
From the Pastor
One day early this summer I stopped to visit one of our
members who is unable to attend church on Sunday mornings. As I stopped my car at the
curb, I thought I recognized the other car parked in the driveway. Indeed I had! To my
surprise, in the home, was one of our Homebound Communion Assistants, bringing the
sacrament from Sundays service. The three of us visited briefly, and then the
Homebound Communion Assistant continued with her ministry of distributing the sacrament to
the parishioner. I joined in the prayers and conversation and watched as our Communion
Assistant reverently did her work. Joy filled my heart as care was given in the
administration of the sacrament, prayer was shared, and our Sunday morning Holy Communion
was extended to a sister who could not be in our midst.
Our sister who received the sacrament at home also was filled with joy and peace. The
distribution of the sacrament is intended for those too ill, infirm, or weak to gather
with the community. Physically unable to gather regularly with the community, this sister
is part of the Body, one with us in Christ. She experienced the love of the community, the
joy of belonging, in the brief visit of the Communion Assistant, prayers lifted up, the
Word proclaimed, and the Meal shared. The Risen Christ, present in Sunday morning Word and
Sacrament, was also present in this gathering in the living room.
Two years ago we began this ministry of lay persons taking Holy Communion to the sick
and homebound of the parish. One Sunday a month Homebound Communion Assistants are sent
forth to those unable to gather with us. Perhaps God is calling you to use your gifts to
serve in this ministry. A love for people and a joy in Christ are two of the gifts needed.
We will provide the training. To serve as a Homebound Communion Assistant, contact Marla
Schmale, 686-2064. To serve as a Sunday morning Communion Assistant, contact Patty Taylor,
788-2435.
- Pastor Jerry Mansholt
From the Deaconess
In July I had one of those new ministry experiences. I made
a pastoral visit to a young man in prison. The next day I sat with his family as they
heard the judge sentence this 21-year-old to 17 years in prison. I cannot know for sure
whether this young man is innocent or guilty. What I do know is the pain and sorrow I saw
on the faces of his family members and the horror I felt at someone with so much potential
spending at least the next eight years in jail.
Why does something like this happen? Perhaps it is easy to point the finger at the
parents, but the blame lies with all of us. This young man or many others like him may be
your neighbor, in your Sunday School class, the bag person at your grocery store, a member
of your childs sports team, etc. Each of us encounters youth regularly in our daily
lives and can have a negative or a positive affect on them.
The city of Wichita can do something positive for our young people. This congregation
can continue to provide a positive, healthy environment. You can find out more about how
you can influence those youth in your lives. Rebecca Groethe, a trainer and presenter from
Search Institute in Minneapolis will be leading a workshop on Healthy Communities *
Healthy Youth on Thursday, September 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Botanica
Gardens (701 Amidon). Come learn more about developmental assets and how together we can
explore the possibility of Wichita being a city that is intentional about positively
impacting our young people.
Please register by September 1 by contacting Rachel Schober at 978-3343. Cost is $10.00
per person, which includes lunch on site. If you have any questions, Id be happy to
chat with you.
- Deaconess Doreen Scheuerman

Dear Reformation Friends,
By the time you read this note, I should be settled into my campus apartment. I will be
continuing a journey God has led me through over the past few years. You
have been a significant part of that journey. I want to take this time to thank you for
the love and support you have shown me. Your care for me spiritually, emotionally, and
financially have been gifts that I accept with great humbleness and appreciation.
"How can I thank God enough for you in return for all the joy I have in the
presence of our God because of you?"
(1 Thess.
3:9)
A special thanks to Pastor Mansholt and the Church Council
for their faithful efforts on my behalf. To Kimberly, Jane, Nancy, and Rachel:
Thank you for your steadfast friendship.

LEGACY: That Your Faith May Live
The Stewardship Ministry Team will be conducting a fall
program starting in September. The focus of the program will be based on Pauls
letter from 2 Timothy 3:14. Paul urges us to "remember and rekindle" the
legacies of faith we have had passed on to us. We will have Bible studies, a sermon
series, temple talks, and a celebration dinner with the theme: A Time to Remember.
The dinner details are being worked out, and we are planning a catered buffet dinner
similar to the dinner we had at St. Thomas a few years back. This promises to be a
wonderful celebration, urging each of us to reflect on our own legacy of faith and how
that legacy has shaped who we are today and what type of legacy we each will leave.
Please watch for details in bulletins and around the
narthex. We are planning on everyone being a part of this look at our Legacy. We
will enjoy this time to remember the gifts that have come to us and to consider how we
would like to live into Gods future. . . . . . . . . . REMEMBER
Special PBS Series on Dying in America
Support for those facing terminal illness and death is the
focus of the PBS series on dying in America, "ON OUR OWN TERMS: Moyers on
Dying." As a faith community we search for the ways we can best respond to those in
our midst who are facing death. This special series by Bill Moyers provides important
information and insights. The series will be aired on PBS (Channel 8) on four consecutive
evenings, September 10-13, 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.,and will cover the following
topics:
- Living with Dying: Focuses on peoplepatients
and caregiverswho are searching for ways to recognize and talk about dying as more
than a medical event. It is a part of life that each individual, in every American
community, approaches with different attitudes, beliefs, and wishes.
- A Different Kind of Care: Examines the evaluation of
a new kind of care commonly referred to as "palliative care." Leaders in this
movement emphasize a full spectrum of pain management, symptom relief and support
including physical psychological and spiritual care.
- A Death of Ones Own: To many, dying well means
a measure of control over how we die. We have many fears. This program looks at issues
surrounding efforts to control how we die.
- A Time to Change: Follows crusading individuals who
are working to change public policy to improve the care of the dying. They are creating
models for change that deal with issues of insurance coverage, medical training, and
support and relief for families who are shouldering the burden of care giving.
Is your son or daughter heading off to college this fall? If so, the
church office would like to have his/her new mailing address so that it can be
added to our Re-Focus mailing list. Also, we would appreciate having e-mail
addresses for students. Having both will enable us to keep in touch and help your
student keep informed about happenings at Reformation.
Nurturing Faith in the Home
Although prayer is one of the seven faith practices that shape us as
disciples, it is not always easy for us to pray with others, even our children. Listed
below are suggestions and activities for different age levels.
Infants and Toddlers:
Children learn by example that prayer is important to Gods
people. Look for opportunities for your child to observe others praying. You can include
even very young children in family devotions, grace before meals, and bedtime prayers.
Take your child along when you attend worship services. Encourage your child to join in on
prayers by folding his or her hands or saying some of the words. Be prepared, though, to
take your child to the nursery when he or she becomes restless or noisy.
Preschool & Kindergarten:
Provide small slips of paper and ask family members to write or
dictate their own short prayers. Help young children get started by talking with them
about things for which they would like to thank God. Then write down the words of each
childs prayer exactly as he or she says them. Place the prayers in a shoe box. Each
day, take one or more of the prayers out of the container and read them aloud as part of
your family prayers at mealtime, bedtime, or during family devotions.
Lower Elementary:
Obtain a Bible storybook that contains easy-to-read versions of
Bible stories. Select a story about prayer such as the story of Solomon praying in the
Temple (1 Kings 8:22-30) or Jesus teaching the disciples to pray (Luke 11:1-4). Together
with your child, read aloud the story. If your child enjoys reading, he or she might like
to take turns with you to read paragraphs or sections of the story. Afterwards, talk with
your child about the importance of prayer in the story.
Upper Elementary:
Begin a habit of blessing each family member as they depart the
house for the day. The blessing might be as simple as placing a hand on the head of each
person and saying, God bless (name of person), and give you a safe and happy day.
Your preteen might be overjoyed to be asked to give you the blessing, too.

New Audiotapes in Our Library
The Parish Nurse ministry has recently added three new audiotapes to
the church library. They are part of the "Learning to Live" audio cassette
series, which is being produced by the Via Christi Medical Center. This series will cover
a variety of health concerns. The titles of these first three tapes are:
The Prostate: How to Save Your Own Life
Stroke: Why They Call It Brain Attack
Breast Cancer: What You Should Know. What We Can Do
Additional tapes from this series should be available soon. They are
reportedly very well done, with lots of helpful information.
Wills Workshop - September 17
One of the most important documents you will ever sign is your
will!! Our congregation is sponsoring a Wills, Estates, and Gift Planning Seminar
to provide you with information about preparing or revising your will. Please plan to
attend.
Rev. Keith T. Nelson of the ELCA Foundation will be present to talk
about the advantages of having a will, and how and why many Lutherans give to the church
through their wills.
Your will is a personal statement about your life and your
possessions. Through your will you can:
- create a measure of comfort and security for others
- honor a friendship
- support your favorite causes
- remember your church
Attend our congregations wills workshop on Sunday,
September 17, at 9:45 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Hope to see you there!

needs this service, please call Eva Whetstone at 681-2007.
Oaks Indian Center
Oaks Indian Center, located in Oaks, Oklahoma,
is home for 48 Native American children in need. They need the love
and guidance only a stable home can provide. They need food and clothing, and above all,
an opportunity to obtain a good education. Oaks Indian Center provides for the needs of
these children and is currently appealing for funds which will provide space for an
additional 24 children.
Plans are underway at Reformation for an Oaks Indian Center
Sunday later this fall. More information to follow.
Meal-A-Month Mininstry
Summertime is coming to an end; the picnics and barbecues will slow
down, and kids will begin homework. As you settle back into your normal routine, please
jot down the suggested food pantry items listed on the board in the narthex (or note the
listing below). You may bring them any Sunday or wait until our "food offering
Sunday," when we will have the meal-a-month yellow bags brought to the altar. Watch
the announcements in the Sunday bulletin to find out when. The September menu is:
- Peanut Butter
- Jelly
- Crackers
- Fruit
- Dry Milk (optional)
Invite and Welcome!
This is a time of year when we hope to see more visitors at church.
We are inviting through mailers being delivered to 10,000 homes around this area of
Wichita. (See the poster in the narthex) Can you think of someone to invite to come
to church with you?
All of us are asked to help welcome newcomers. Please make a
special effort to extend our Christian hospitality by:
- Wearing your name pins
- Greeting someone you have not met with a friendly smile and a
"Good Morning!" (This is good even if you happen to be greeting a 10-year
member!)
- Including your address and phone number when signing the red
Friendship Register, especially if someone you do not know is seated in your pew.
All of us can help Reformation continue to be a congregation where
all are welcome!

ELCA Television Ads
Television advertising for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America will be seen on KSNW, Channel 3, at the 10:00 p.m. news time, beginning September
5. Time for thirty-second television spots for 10 days running has been purchased
with money from congregations in central and western Kansas. Additional money from the
ELCA was made possible by a grant from AAL Insurance. The congregations of Area Ministry
Five have provided the leadership for this ministry.
Anti-Racism Training
In March, Jill Pletcher and Pastor Mansholt attended two and half
days of anti-racism training at Inter-Faith Ministries. What is anti-racism training? It
is learning how to live individually and as organizations in opposition to the devious
ways that racism creeps into our lives. In July, several other members of Reformation
attended a brief introductory event. A second full training event is scheduled for September
21-23. CROSSROADS Ministry of Chicago will lead the training. We would like to
have 5-7 people from Reformation take this training and serve on an Anti-Racism Ministry
Team at Reformation. If you have a gift in this ministry of racial justice, speak to Jill
or Pastor.
Meditation Garden Dedication
The work on the Meditation Garden is completed, with the exception
of landscaping and a couple of minor details. The dedication of the Meditation Garden and
Sculpture has been set for Sunday, September 24, 4:00 p.m. Wil Johnson is
heading a Ministry Team planning the Service of Dedication. Mark your calendars and invite
your friends and neighbors.

Our Telecare ministry team will begin its third Telecare campaign
between August 28 and September 15. The purpose of Telecare ministry is to reach each
local member with a caring call to offer assistance and prayer support as well as an
opportunity to share cares and concerns. Be
expecting your call soon!
