Reformation Lutheran Church LOGOS
Temporarily Suspended Fall
2003-Spring 2004
LOGOS is a four-part congregational ministry dedicated to nurturing school-age children
(K-6th grade) into discipleship. The four-part program consists of: Recreation, Worship,
Family Time, and Bible Study. LOGOS meets every Wednesday evening (October-May) from 5:00
to 7:45 p.m. Each week there is a different theme!
The LOGOS program at Reformation is currently in its' sixth year.
Each Wednesday evening (October-May) 40-50 children in grades K-6 meet from 5:00 P.M. to
7:45 P.M.. As the children arrive, they are often met by Eva Whetstone who serves as
Registrar and Treasurer.
The evening begins with a 30 minute period of recreation, creative pursuits and fun
interaction. Julie Hansen heads this portion of the ministry aided by Robin Folkerts and
Nancy Watkins.
At 5:30 P.M. the children engage in a variety of music and worship activities. Nina
Kindt is in charge of this portion assisted by Anita Mansholt, Virginia Leikvold, Heidi
Jensen, Twyla Hill and Janice Yeskie. By 6:10 P.M. a hungry crew moves to Family Time
where a healthy, warm meal is served to approximately 110 people including confirmands and
adult volunteers. We have four cook teams who prepare the food on a rotating basis.
Shirley Metz and Jan Barr; Carol Ott and Densie Peer; Carole Lofing and Mary Ward
Pfeiffer; Patty Taylor and Susan Bachman all serve in this capacity.
Pastor Mansholt serves as Dinner Dean and directs our "holy hilarity". Mary
Brittain and Angela Davis direct their creative energies to developing themes and
coordinating the large group of volunteers necessary to keep this portion running
smoothly. Pauline and Art Latham set the tables. We have eighteen table parents: Rachel
Couch, Lynn Schriever, Linda and Gary Hoepner, Victoria Morgan, David Dibble, Sharon and
Randy Fornshell, Pat Arnold, Holly Coleman, Peter Kretsch, Wil Johnson, Lola Wilks, Susan
Martin and Laurel Davis. Donna Moyer washes the table cloths and bakes cupcakes. Marcia
Werts, Pat Arnold and Pat Johnson also bake cupcakes.
Following dinner a hardy crew consisting of Michelle Groves, Mark and Jack Dickerson,
Sharon and Randy Fornshell, Wil Johnson, Ken Hobart, Nancy Watkins, Virginia Leikvold, as
well as occasional parent volunteers, move in to clean up and wash dishes. Howard Leikvold
packages the left overs and takes them to Interfaith Inn Homeless Shelter.
Meanwhile the children proceed to Bible Time. Deaconess Doreen Scheuerman is in carge
of this part. she has a dedicated group of teachers who spend time preparing stimulating
and interactive lessons to help the children develop a more personal relationship with our
creator. Teachers this year are: Linda Hoepner, Susan Martin, Lotus Gerards, Keith Martin,
Laurenbrook Ellingson, Kathy Drake, David Dibble, Victoria Morgan, Lynn Schriever and
Vernette Chance.
During the travel time (before and after LOGOS) and throughout the 2 3/4 hours of the
program, 31 people have volunteered to faith fully pray for the children and staff each
week in ten minute segments. Judy McDiffett is in charge of this vital ministry. Her
volunteers are: Lorraine Burrow, Jane Donaldson, Jane Sanders, Nora and Doris Steg, Muriel
Hansen, Richard McDiffett, Vernette Chance, Tom Caplan, Pat Anderson, Jan Peter, Iva
Volbrecht, Lyla Keith, Vera Bentson, Loren and Martha Deines, Mary Lou Bengston, Dovie
Bowers, Dolores Hoyle, Sandy Muse, Emma Born, Virginia Schuessler, Jack Haines, Dorla
Alseike, Leona Synstegard, Jolene Dougherty, Vickie Augustine, Carolyn Pitts, Gary Carson
and Susan Cherches. As you can see, Reformation is blessed with many individuals who
generously invest time in the children of Reformation.
LOGOS was a new program at Reformation last January. There was much
speculation among the leadership team about how things would work out. Now it is known.
LOGOS is a program through which God's blessings flow.
It is a program of worship, Bible study, play, and fellowship for
school-age children of all ages. LOGOS meets every Wednesday evening during the school
year (holidays excluded).
As the children gather at 5:00 p.m., there is supervised Play Time.
Then the children move to a period for age-appropriate Worship Skills, during which they
may sing, learn about liturgy and worship symbolism, or practice for the Bell Choir.
After Worship, there is dinner, always a big hit with the kids. The
menus are casual, but children are asked to use their "please" and "thank
you" table manners. The evening is rounded out with Bible Study, organized by age.
Last semester about 50 children, ranging in age from kindergarten
through high school, participated in LOGOS. This year, it is hoped there will be even more
interest.
ALL parents of children enrolling in LOGOS or considering enrollment
MUST attend one of two registration meetings. Information and registration materials will
be provided. Parents are required to attend one of these meetings. If vacation interferes,
please call Ruth Koepsel to make alternate arrangements.
