What Wondrous Love Is This?

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul,
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul?

When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down; when I was sinking down
beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul, for my soul;
Christ laid aside his crown for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing; to God and to the Lamb I will sing;
to God and to the Lamb, who is the great I AM, I will sing; I will sing,
while millions join the theme, I will sing.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on; and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on;
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing God’s love for me, and through eternity, I’ll sing on; I’ll sing on.
And through eternity, I’ll sing on.

Text: North American folk hymn, 19th cent.

What wondrous love is this that comes to live among us and is treated by us with contempt and hatred, then repays that contempt by saving us with his life?

I finished Crossways this spring. Crossways is a Bible Study that takes you through the Bible in two years. Through that two-year period, I read two different versions of the Bible cover to cover. I started reading the Bible again this summer. Time and time again, God’s people have turned away from him, and God has punished them; they repent, God forgives them; they do okay for a while, only to turn away from him again. And the cycle repeats.

When my children were little, I would get frustrated at their behavior and think how much it concerned me to watch, because I knew how much it was hurting them. Then a realization came over me. How many times had I sunk under God’s righteous frown? How many times had I asked for God’s forgiveness, knowing God would forgive me? God had laid aside his crown for my soul.

I ponder this wondrous love that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul.

For the rest of my days I will sing of God’s love for me until I take my final breath on this plain, and then I will sing into the next plain for all eternity. I will sing of God’s love for me and you!

What a wondrous love this is!
