Read John 4:1-42

The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?" (v. 11)

TEACHING BY EXAMPLE

Jesus taught by example. One day while traveling, he struck up a conversation with a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. In those days, Jews did not associate with Samaritans. Was this Jesus a rebel? Was he a radical trying to take on society and overthrow traditions?

Jesus asked this woman for a drink of water, surprising her. He told her that if she knew the "gift of God" and who he really was, she would ask for a drink of "living water." Intrigued, she asked Jesus if he was greater than Jacob. Jesus replied that whoever drinks the water he gives will never thirst again.

The woman begged him for this water, and Jesus told her to go get her husband. She spoke honestly that she had no husband. Jesus commented that she did not try to hide her sin from him but spoke the truth. At this, the woman declared Jesus a prophet. Jesus then taught her about God, the Father, and the uniting of worshipers in spirit and in truth.

The woman, a bit confused, said that she knew the Messiah was coming and that he would explain everything. Jesus then said to her, "I who speak to you am he." At this, the woman ran to the city, telling of her experience and saying that Jesus could be the Christ they were waiting for.

Meanwhile his disciples had returned and, having seen Jesus talking to

a Samaritan, they said nothing. Instead they begged Jesus to eat. Knowing they were thinking about a Jew speaking to a Samaritan, he replied, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work."

Jesus had not judged this woman but had taught her. And through a parable of the sower and the reaper, he once more taught the disciples to go out and reap what he has sown and gather those who believe.

Father, you know me just as I am, a sinner. Forgive my sins and always help me to not judge, but to tell of your greatness and grace through your son, Jesus Christ.
