PUTTING OTHERS FIRST
Christ came into the world to save God’s children. He gave his life that we may have eternal life. The great love and care of Christ is evident when, even as he was dying, he looked to the care of his mother. He gave her care over to a disciple.
I knew as early as last April what I would write in this year’s Lenten Devotional. On April 9, 2005, a young sheriff’s deputy, Kurt Ford, was shot and killed in Newton. He died saving someone else’s life.
Kurt’s life was a tribute to Christ. His kindness was legendary. He was a man who would apologize for arresting someone. He was a man who visited the elderly victim of a traffic accident several times. Countless people remember the words of support and encouragement Kurt gave along the way.
One of Kurt’s greatest attributes was that he put others first. Kurt was a member of the Emergency Response Team in Harvey County. He trained extensively for this role. He put himself at risk to save others. He did not question whether or not they were worthy.
Kurt’s life embodied all that is good, and kind, and true. This brave, courageous young man left a widow and two young sons. He left his twin sister and other family. His death left all of us who knew and loved him heartbroken. His death left a community devastated.
Christ, we thank you for sending your son to die for us. We thank you for the life of Kurt Ford and others like him. We pray for the safety of all who serve you. Please bless all who grieve the death of this fine young man. Bring us your comfort.
