APPROACHING THE TABLE
Let’s explore these verses from several viewpoints.
The Prophet: After the Babylonian exile, Isaiah speaks to the people. After the dark years, the Lord has set them free and led them back to the Promised Land. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Isaiah is proclaiming the Lord’s favor and salvation. Israel will have his attention and his favor and his year of Jubilee. A place at the table.
The People: The “me” in this text has been interpreted as the people of Israel. Set free and returned from Babylon, they are in the Lord’s favor again. They shall rebuild the Promised Land. A bright future awaits. They will be the pillars of the Lord’s kingdom. They will set the table.
Christ: In Galilee, Christ reads this text and states: “It is I. The prophecy is fulfilled.” (Luke 4:16) He will proclaim the coming of the Lord’s kingdom, his splendor, forgiveness, love, and judgment. Did they who heard believe? Do we believe? He will serve the table.
We who read this: Christ called us to be his own, to care for his flock, to share his message. When we walk in his footsteps and care for “the least of these,” we are proclaiming the good news, the forgiveness of sins and the restoration of God’s kingdom. We are at the table.
Do we serve and share and reach out in Christ’s name?
Triune God, may your Spirit dwell in me and your Christ guide me in the way and tasks you have appointed for me. May I proclaim you in word and action, inviting the poor, brokenhearted, captive, imprisoned, and mourning humanity to your feast to know your favor and justice. Accept us at your table now and forever. Amen.
