RICH IN FAITH
God’s table is an open invitation to any and all of God’s people, to all who have faith and love. In this verse from James, “poor” is symbolic not just of lack of financial resources, but of those who live a more simple and less cluttered existence. Poor is not meant as a negative here. When one is not focused on financial gain and worldly things, one can be much more focused on faith and love.
It is extremely hard today to find time and energy to devote to faith and love. So many things turn our attention away from God and his promises. It is easy to think that we are so rich in activities and social pressures that we might not need God all the time. We are blessed in so many ways that it takes being “poor” in some aspect – an illness, financial misfortune or loss of friends – to turn our focus back to God and his grace. Those who don’t have as much realize through faith what a blessing it is to have a place at the table with no questions asked.
It is also important for those of us who go to God’s table to make sure others know that they have a place there – a place without judgment, a place to be forgiven. We must help spread the good news that the table is open to all who have faith and love of God.
God, help us to be rich in faith and thankful to you for our place at your table. Help us to invite and encourage others to come to the table. Help us to understand that being poor in possessions and time-consuming matters might lead us to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which you promised to those who love you. Amen.
