Read Deuteronomy 15:7-11

“You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.”

RESPONDING TO A NEED

Last September, Reformation Lutheran Church began a ministry to the poor, hungry and homeless in Wichita by agreeing to host a community breakfast at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church the third Saturday of each month. When we took on this project, the Service Board agreed that it should be solely supported by donations from our congregation. We didn’t want this ministry to be another “line item” on the church budget.

When this ministry was presented to our congregation, we asked for financial support (approximately $200 a month) and for volunteers who were willing to shop, cook, serve and clean up. The response was overwhelming – we had to add a second page to the sign-up list to accommodate the names. The second page is now full and there are names written at the bottom of the page and in the margins The generosity of my church family never ceases to amaze me.

Although there may be duplicate ministries in Wichita, the need is still great. We serve approximately 75 to 100 people at the breakfast each month. What a rewarding experience this has been for me and for the others who are helping with this ministry. A need was presented to us and we responded, just as God has commanded.

Dear Heavenly Father, let us always be generous with our gifts and be ever thankful for the many blessings you have bestowed upon us. Help us to graciously and willingly share with our brothers and sisters in need. Amen.

Susan Martin
