WHAT EXAMPLE DO YOU SET?
These verses come from the teachings of King Lemuel’s mother. As a parent, she wanted to teach him the importance of treating others with respect. She wanted him to know right and wrong and the joy in helping those who might not be able to help themselves.
I understand this because I, too, am a parent. My parents taught me to treat others as I wanted to be treated, and I hope I have set a good example for my children. God set an example for us to follow by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, healing the sick, and befriending the lonely. He calls to us to reach out to those around us and show them love.
We have many opportunities in our community to help those who need a hand. For example, we provide breakfast once a month for the homeless. This is a chance to be involved with people who need and appreciate the outpouring of help and love. We have many opportunities within our church walls to serve. We always need Sunday school teachers, youth sponsors, and Luther’s LIGHT volunteers. We are always excited about getting new members involved in our church family. Their new ideas help energize us.
There are countless ways to give of your time and talents. When adults get involved, we set a great example for our young people. It’s time for us to move over and make room at our table.
Heavenly Father, during this Lenten season, I pray that just as Jesus was risen from the dead and given new life, our Christian spirit will be given new life. Help us to love and care for those who need us the same way we have been cared for and loved by your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
