CHRIST, THE LIGHT OF A DARK WORLD
Martin Luther knew the power of the devil. He writes about it in
a “Mighty Fortress is Our God.” Verse 1 states, “The old evil
foe, sworn to work us woe, with dread craft and might, he arms
himself to fight, on earth he has no equal.”
He then writes: “No strength of ours can match his might! We
would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God
himself elected. Ask who this may be: Lord of hosts is he! Jesus
Christ, our Lord, God’s only Son, adored. He holds the field
victorious.”
It is easy to get discouraged by the state of our world today: A
world where violence, greed, and corruption seem to be the order of
the day. A world where anger flourishes. Our world today would be
without hope, were it not for our Savior, Jesus Christ. God sent his
Son into the world to redeem us. Our Lord and Savior died a tortuous
death that we might have everlasting life. Sometimes it is hard to
understand how God could sacrifice his only Son to benefit mankind.
But God did sacrifice his beloved Son, to save us, his beloved
creation.
God sent his only Son to bring light into our dark world. As the
children of God, we have only to accept this free gift of salvation.
All we have to do is trust and believe. Because of our belief, we
serve. The words of the song “The Lord Now Sends Us Forth” say
it all: “The Lord now sends us forth with hands to serve and
give, to make of all the earth a better place to live. The angels
are not sent into our world of pain to do what we were meant to do
in Jesus name; that falls to you and me and all who are made free.
Help us, O Lord, we pray, to do your will today.”
Thank you, God, for sending your Son to redeem us; for bringing
his light to our dark world. Help us, we pray, to do your will
today.
