Read 1 John 1

“God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.” (v. 5)

BE A WITNESS TO THE LIGHT

Using the analogy of light is a perfect way to understand the good news of God’s love, forgiveness and redemption through our Lord Jesus Christ. Light allows us to see form, shape and function --- it enlightens us and gives us a sense of our physical reality. Similarly, knowledge of God and what our relationship to Him should be enlightens us and gives us a sense of what our spiritual reality is and what it can be --- that Jesus died for our sins and allows us to be inheritors in the world that is to come.

This analogy also applies to the absence of the Light --- or darkness. In the physical world, a lack of light hinders what we can see. When we can’t get around and function, we’re more likely to take the wrong turn on a path and get lost or hurt. Similarly, without knowing God, we are spiritually in darkness. Without his word, we have no sense of spiritual direction in our lives and must face life without his guidance. Having a partial knowledge of his word puts us in twilight. We have an idea of his basic Word, but do not try to increase our knowledge or to be a witness to the Light of Faith.

John was a witness to the Light who was “… a voice of one crying in the wilderness.” We can relate to him because he was like us and didn’t claim any special status with God. “He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.” (John 1:8) We can ourselves be witnesses to the Light in our own lives by studying God’s Word, sharing the Word with others, and demonstrating the Light of Faith through our service to others.

Dear Lord, help us to be witnesses to your Light according to our gifts and skills. By your grace, let us move from the darkness or twilight of life without your Word and be bathed in the pure Light of understanding of your Will. Let us continue to grow in our faith so that we may serve your Will to be “Servants of God, guided by the Holy Spirit, to make Christ known.” Amen
