Read Luke 2: 8-11

“Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid: for see --- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all people.’” (vv. 9-10)

HOPE AND LIGHT IN OUR DARKEST HOUR

There are times when everything in the world seems amiss. The newspaper, radio and television coverage is filled with accounts of terrorism, war and evil acts perpetrated on innocent, vulnerable people. Natural disasters occur. A gigantic tsunami claims the lives of more than 160,000 people in 13 countries. Ice storms knock out power lines in the Midwest. The Sierras are blanketed in 22 feet of snow, and torrential rains trigger devastating mudslides on the West Coast. The list seems endless. Disease compromises the health and well-being of countless others. Fear often permeates our country and the world as people try to cope with all the trials that surround them.

Where is God in all of this? Searching for answers, Christians should turn to the word of God. God has made promises and he keeps his promises. God has promised that he will always be with us. We are never alone. He alone is in control of our world. He asks us to trust him in all things rather than permitting anxiety to rule our lives or succumbing to fear. Believing in his promises brings hope and light into the darkest hour.

In the midst of misery, God sent his Son, who was born in a lowly manger, as a light so that no one who believes in him should stay in darkness. He provided the way for our salvation. His life on earth served as an example for how we are to live our lives. When tragedy occurs, God’s people are called to respond and reach out in love following Christ’s example.

Heavenly Father, when we are discouraged, strengthen our faith and teach us to trust in you in all circumstances. Help us to serve as a conduit of your love and spread your Light to a weary world.
