DUSTY FEET

Then he took the cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them saying, "Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

"Ubi caritas et amor, ubi caritas Deus ibi est." This Latin text is translated "where charity and love are found, God is there" and is a wonderful text for us to contemplate today as we hear once again Jesus’ new commandment to love one another as we have been loved.

This command was spoken by Jesus who knelt to wash dusty feet and who came to serve rather than to be served. Christ’s actions set an example for us. He crossed religious and social boundaries to dine with sinners and outcasts -- and now he offers his own body and blood in the meal we share in his name. Remembering this, we are called upon to continue as servants in our daily lives.

Our discipleship can be lived out in simple and extravagant ways. When we show acts of love, compassion and tolerance rather than hate and judgment, God is there. When we share our wealth, time and possessions with those in need, God is there. When we pray and work for peace, justice and understanding, God is there. When we set examples of servanthood for children, God is there.

A hymn from the Church in Ghana, somewhat new to our hymn repertoire, states simply and clearly the Maundy Thursday commandment of love.

Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love
Show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you.
Kneels at the feet of his friends, silently washes their feet,
Master who pours out himself for them.
Neighbors are wealthy and poor, varied in color and race,
Neighbors are nearby and far away.
These are the ones we will serve, these are the ones we will love.
All these are neighbors to us and you.
Kneel at the feet of our friends, silently washing their feet.
This is the way we will live with you.

Dear Lord of love and mercy, fill us with your love so that what we do and say will proclaim your life saving love to all the world.
