And
whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a
disciple truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.
We live in a society where individuals often work tirelessly and expend
enormous energy to achieve success, whether it be in the form of power, performance,
recognition, or wealth. Consequently, we often tend to view ourselves and others against a
very different standard than the one used by God.
We often think of bishops, ordained ministers, high profile church lay
leaders, members of the churchs hierarchy, or people active in community projects as
those who serve God best. Such people and the gifts they bring are undeniably important
and certainly necessary, but they represent only one facet of service. God intends for
each of us to serve him in the way we live our lives each day.
Several years ago, Reformation sponsored classes to assist members in
discovering their spiritual gifts. Some of you were able to attend. Perhaps you were
surprised by what the sessions revealed. Some participants found strengths in many areas,
while others found fewer. All were made aware that God is a masterful architect, creating
each person with exactly the perfect gifts to fulfill Gods plans.
Each gift is equal in Gods sight. Robert Browning wrote in his
verse play Pippa Passes: "All service ranks the same with God."
No one gift is superior to another.
Every day, regardless of our circumstances, we are presented with
numerous opportunities to share a cup of cold water with another. There are many different
ways to do so: a smile, a phone call, an offer of friendship to one who is lonely, a meal
to one who is hungry. The list is endless.
God calls us to submit to his will, to serve others with humility and
compassion throughout our daily lives deeds known only to God.
Heavenly Father, we ask that you will enrich our faith and guide
us to respond in love to those with whom we come into contact.
