Read John 15:9-13

LOVE IS ALL AROUND

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

Today is Valentine’s Day. The day when love is all around us. Thoughts of love are on our minds, in our hearts, and right before our very eyes. Today’s Bible passage is so appropriate since love is the theme of this day.

This passage tells us how very much we are loved by Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. God shows his love daily in the many blessings he sends our way. He provides us with food, clothing, shelter, and our health. He shows his love through family and friends.

We see from our Bible reading how we must love Jesus and our fellow man. Jesus asks that we be faithful to him. He asks that we love those around us, even when we don’t agree with their views and opinions. He asks that we get past our differences and accept each other as we are.

Jesus says there is no greater love a person can show than to die for his friends, and he showed us this greatest love by dying on the cross to save us from our sins.

Most of us will not be asked to die so that others might live. I thank God that on September 11, some very loving heroes gave their lives for complete strangers to protect all of us and our freedoms. These heroes certainly followed the example of Jesus and gave us the greatest love they could offer. What a sacrifice for their fellows.

My hope for all of us is that we put aside our differences and live in peace and harmony with those around us.

Dear Lord, my prayer on this day of love is that we may look into our hearts and reflect on the ways in which we can better love our Lord and Savior and our fellow man. I also pray that we will all try harder to do just that. Amen
