"I did not hide my
face from insult and spitting."
As parents, grandparents, teachers and friends, we make every effort to
lead and teach, if not with words, then by example. We hope that those whom we are trying
to reach will listen, learn and benefit from our words and actions. However, listening is
a skill requiring some effort, as most of us are better at talking than listening!
Fortunately we can develop better listening skills if we apply ourselves. Listening to one
another is one of the ways we show our caring and concern for others. In fact, if we
listen to Gods word, he tells us to do just that.
Speaking of listening, do we truly listen to Gods word? And, if
we listen to it, study it, and ponder it, do we then heed it? God does speak to us in many
ways; are we listening? Yet, when we pray, we know God does listen to us. Isnt it
reassuring to know that our prayers are heard? What must God think when he speaks so
clearly to us and we continue to disregard his direction?
This scripture tells us the writer listened, really heard, then obeyed,
and was willing to withstand disagreement and even ridicule to honor Gods word.
Should we be willing to do the same? This Lenten season might be the perfect time to
begin.
Prayer: Gracious Lord, thank you for your endless patience with us as
we try to listen and follow your word and your example. Be with us on this Lenten journey
and help us to be good listeners. Amen.
