"So if I, your
Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one anothers
feet."
In Jesus day to wash someones feet was usually the duty of
a servant. Jesus was a servant to others and served those with him. He told us we are to
wash the feet of others. In other words, we should provide service to everyone.
We remember that Jesus was willing to wash the feet of everyone. He
knew that very soon he would be betrayed and crucified; yet he washed the feet of Judas
just as he did the other disciples. To be able to treat everyone the same is an example
Jesus wants us to learn. He is teaching so many lessons in the simple act of washing
someones feet. Other examples include loving others, being humble, respecting
others, being caring and kind to others and the list goes on. His example is
certainly profound and should be followed by all of us.
When I read this scripture I think of a retreat at Reformation a few
years ago. This retreat was something Ill never forget. The theme for this retreat
was feet. Even the nametags were in the shape of feet. One thing that was done was the
washing of everyones feet. These verses have a special meaning to me now that I have
experienced the washing of feet.
Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to be there for others. Give me the
strength and courage to do all I can for family and friends. Guide me as I go through the
Lenten season. Help me to remember all that you have done for me. Forgive me for the sins
I have committed. Forgive me for the many times Ive not done what I could for
others. Please bless us and keep us in your faith. Amen.
