Luke 2:8-11

Life’s Unexpected Blessings

"In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them ..."

Can you imagine how the shepherds must have felt? They were the first to learn of Christ’s birth. What an awesome feeling that must have been. The shepherds were truly blessed to be a part of that wonderful evening.

God provided the world a wonderful blessing. God can also provide other unexpected blessings.

My own blessing has been my two wonderful babies. My wife and I had been told for several years that she would not be able to have children. Yet after many prayers, we were blessed with twins. I thank God everyday for them and feel that they are our unexpected blessings.

The blessing of these two babies seems enormous to me. Yet in truth, it pales in comparison to the blessing of the lowly baby that the shepherds saw that night. This is what makes it so hard to appreciate the wonderful joy that the shepherds experienced that night. God allowed them the opportunity to be the first to see the birth of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. What a blessing!

Then spread the news of the great joy that is for all the people!

Prayer: Dear Lord; thank you for all the blessings that you have given me, but mostly thank you for the wonderful blessing for the presence of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen
