Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 46
March 29, 1997. Today's Bible verse is Acts 10: 34-43
Holy Week
All Who Believe Receive Forgiveness of Sins
In the reading for today, Peter shares the good news
that Jesus is the long-awaited Savior. In a few words, he summarizes
the essence of Jesus' life, death and resurrection for the hungry
souls gathered to hear him. After Jesus received the Holy Spirit
and power at his baptism Peter declares, this Lord of all went
about "preaching peace" and "doing good and healing
all who were oppressed by the devil."
He was hanged on a tree, but God raised him on the
third day. He appeared to a few chosen witnesses, including Peter.
Then he commanded these witnesses (disciples and apostles) to
"testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the
living and the dead." As we remembered Jesus' crucifixion
yesterday and wait expectantly for the celebration of his resurrection
tomorrow, we can take comfort in knowing that "he shows no
partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him ... receives
forgiveness of sins through his name."
The Son was sent not to condemn the world, but in
order to save the world (John 3: 17).
He is, indeed the light of all nations and the Savior
of all!
Thanks be to God!
Prayer: Dear
Lord, our hearts are heavy as we remember your cruel death on
a cross when you had done no wrong. You died for our sins, not
yours. We feel humbled and unworthy of such love and sacrifice.
Yet we rejoice that you, who are all-knowing and compassionate,
are the judge and Lord of all. Prepare our hearts to receive
you as our personal Savior today and everyday. Amen.
