Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 43
March 26, 1997. Today's Bible verse is Matthew 27:45-54
Holy Week
No Forsakenness
The story of Christ's death is difficult for all
Christians. Reflecting on it can be one of the hardest parts
of Holy week. Imagine, then, what it must have been like for
His followers, at the time. Their leader, friend and teacher
had died and they were without direction.
Christ himself was confused and miserable. His last
words showed his fear that God had forsaken Him, as He, perhaps,
felt that he was forsaking His disciples.
As Christians, we all go through difficult periods
in our lives, when we feel that God has forsaken us. At other
times we fear that we are not upholding our responsibility to
others and that we are forsaking them.
God did not forsake Christ, but was with Him, then.
And Christ did not forsake his disciples, but returned to them
and gave them direction for continuing His ministry. God has
not forsaken us, either; but is with us now.
Prayer: Dear
Lord. Thank you for Your help and guidance. Help us to know
that you are with us always, and that with Your help, we can come
through for those who need us. Amen.
