Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 39
March 22, 1997. Today's Bible verse is 1 Peter 3: 13-22
Sometimes Doing Right Can Cause You Trouble
The Bible verses for today starts by talking about
doing what is right even when this might cause you trouble. I
was thinking as I read this part - why would harm come to you
if you're doing what is right? The verse goes on to say Jesus
was doing what was right, he never sinned. Doing the right thing
in his case went so far as to put him on the cross to die. Because
of Jesus' death we are saved from sin. I certainly see the harm
in this situation. I really would have caused a big scene if
I'd been Jesus. My reaction would have been, what are these people
doing. I'm not in the wrong, why would they kill someone like
me? Jesus was able to go ahead and ask God for help and even
ask God to forgive those that were involved.
As Christians, we need to ask for help and because
we believe doesn't mean we won't have trouble and temptations.
By our faith we are able to have the strength to face each day.
I have times when I have given God lots of opportunity to leave
me because I was so stubborn, and wouldn't ask for help. There
are situations that seem terrible - we're Christians, why is this
happening? I need to remember Jesus and ask God for help. All
of us have problems, it's just part of life. We manage to come
through trouble with the help of God.
I do know God shows me every once in a while he's
there. Just recently there was a funeral. The person passed
away was in the military. As the service ended a group of planes
flew over. God must have sent those planes, there is no other
explanation, really uplifting. What a nice surprise to have a
fly over. This is certainly a time we can give God the glory.
Prayer: Heavenly
Father, thank you for our many blessings. Guide me and be with
me each day. Thank you for the surprises you sometimes bring
us. Be with all of my family and take care of me. Amen.
