Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 37

March 20, 1997. Today's Bible verse is Isaiah 50: 4-9a

A Great Deal of Help From My Friend

The song "Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered" expresses a common predicament these days. Confusion confronts us on many levels.

A lady stood in the middle of Grand Central Station hearing the call of the many cities to which trains were going. Finally she went to the information booth and to the person there asked... Do you know where I'm going?

How can life stack up with a greater degree of light, wisdom, value, direction?

Isaiah responds..50:7a The Lord God helps me. 50:4b morning by morning the Lord wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. This sounds like a great deal of help from my friend The Lord God.

Jesus continually gave wisdom, help, healing, and light to all in need. Jesus' words were indeed grace to confused people in confusing situations.

To each of us Jesus comes as help. The Holy Spirit works through word, sacrament, fellowship and service that we would not be alone dealing with life's issues.

Yes at times we scratch our heads - what now we ask.

The Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:9 testifies "God shall supply all your need according to the riches in Christ Jesus." This sounds like a GREAT deal of HELP from our friend, our Savior Jesus. Thanks be to God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus help me today as I face life's questions. Grant me your wisdom, teach me in your Spirit, waken me to be as one who is taught, guide me in your love. Amen
