Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 20

March 3, 1997. Today's Bible verse is Matthew 18:21-35

WHY?

Why did this happen? That's a question that our family asked several times the past few months. We haven't really experienced many physical injuries, even with 3 kids. The day after telling someone that, our middle son got kicked in the leg on the playground. After a trip to the emergency room and two weeks on crutches, the orthopedic surgeon decided to operate. A second surgery was also necessary.

While he was still recovering, I received a phone call from school that our six year old daughter had fallen from the jungle gym on her back and head. I was told the paramedics were on their way. Another trip to the emergency room. It was determined she would be sore, but fine.

As the two youngest recovered, our oldest son woke up one morning with an inner ear infection, which left him with 70% permanent hearing loss.

I was aware during each injury that God was watching over us, and may in fact be testing our faith. After a few deep breaths, I knew each of these unfortunate incidents could have been worse, and that each child was actually very fortunate. I believe God pulled us together and caused us to trust in him. We prayed that if it be Gods' will, that he would lay his hands on each of them with his healing Spirit.

Editors' Note: As we go to press with this devotional, my oldest son returned from basketball practice today with a broken hand. After another deep breath, we will continue to pray for our safety, and realize God IS watching over us!

Prayer: As we are challenged each day, please help us remember to turn to you in prayer for your counsel. And allow us the faith to be prepared for whatever your answer might be. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
