Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 18

March 1, 1997. Today's Bible verse is John 1: 1-18

Are You Alone?

When I was a child I had a paralyzing fear of the dark. I imagined that some nasty little creatures with sharp teeth were there in the darkness waiting until I was asleep so they could eat me. Or perhaps it was the "Bogeyman" come to get me.

I told my grandmother how I was afraid of the dark, and instead of saying that I was being silly or was imagining things, as others had told me, she said, "It's okay to be afraid of the dark, because sometimes there are monster-like creatures and bogeymen lurking about in the darkness, but there is something you can do about it." I asked what it was, and she said, "Turn to the light." I said, "You mean turn ON the light don't you"?

"No", she said. "I mean turn to Jesus, the everlasting light and pray for His protection." That night I turned to the light for protection from the darkness and I still do today.

Prayer: Protect us from the grown-up "bogeymen" that lurk in our lives. In our times of fear and periods of feeling alone, please help us remember that you are always in our presence. We should turn to you in these times for security and confidence to go on. Amen.
