Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 17
February 28, 1997. Today's Bible verse is Luke 2:40-52
Our Father!
This Bible story is an example of what was required
of Joseph and Mary, as Jesus began to transition from doing his
father's business to doing his Father's business.
This past fall, I helped usher as the congregation
processed to the altar to deposit their Pledge Cards. Assuming
it was merely "idle doodling", I took the pledge card
our younger son was carrying and put it in my pocket. Not too
much later, when I was looking for something else, I found the
card. It took me a minute or two to realize it was not doodling
at all, but instead a properly completed pledge card, a serious
commitment. Knowing his income (allowance), it was humbling to
recognize that his pledge was proportionately more generous than
the one I had turned in that day. Figuring he was too young to
appreciate that facet of Christian education, I had not suggested
he make a pledge. It was uncomfortable to realize that not only
had I failed to lead, I had actually interfered with our son,
as he was going about his "Father's business".
Prayer: Give
us the wisdom to aid and support our children as they go about
Your business. Also, Lord, put Your business in our children's
hearts and give them the strength to not be held back or turned
aside by others who don't have the vision to do what You would
have them do. Amen.
