Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 15
February 26, 1997. Today's Bible verse is Psalm 31: 1-5
Commitment
Everyone at some time in life encounters an especially
stressful situation or series of events that allows us to grow
in our faith and relationship with God. A particularly difficult
situation is when we have to be away from the ones we love.
Several years ago, prior to becoming engaged, a young
couple was faced with a very difficult decision. One was offered
a job opportunity over 500 miles away from where they both lived.
Financial obligations were such that the other could not move
until a new job was secured. The decision was made to pursue
this opportunity. Committed to God, both knew that their complete
trust and faith in God would be the only way to make it through
the terribly lonely time apart.
As God's will, the couple traveled to see each other
every weekend as He watched over them and protected them in their
travels. The weeks were long, the weekends short, but God never
gave them more than they could handle. After a year and a half,
the couple came together again, not only to live in the same city
but as one in holy matrimony with God. While the time apart had
often seemed like an eternity, the absence truly made their hearts
grow fonder with each other, but especially in their relationship
and commitment to God.
Prayer: Dear
Lord, during this Lenten season we pray for the wisdom and strength
to commit ourselves to you not only in times of trouble, but always.
As Christ committed his spirit to you on the cross, teach us
also to trust and depend on you unconditionally, Amen.
