Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 5
February 16, 1997. Today's Bible verse is Matthew 5: 1-16
We Are the Salt of the Earth
"Let your light so shine before men that they
may see your good deeds and praise our Father in Heaven".
These are the words of Jesus as he taught his disciples what
they and all Christians should do. One evening at Logos (a mid-week
youth program our church recently began), the children were asked
to paraphrase the speech of Martin Luther King by telling their
dreams for our nation. They wanted an end to pollution, to be
able to trust other people, to give food to the hungry, and clothes
to the poor and the cold, an end to cruelty to animals, and for
people to live together in peace and love. The adults listened
with love in their hearts, taking credit perhaps for the wonderful
wisdom displayed by the younger people. If we were to carry out
their ideas we would be the salt of the earth and would be letting
our light shine!
Prayer: Dear
Heavenly Father, please help us to listen to the words of Jesus
in the Beatitudes, please help us to hunger for righteousness,
to be merciful, pure in heart, to be peacemakers, and to let our
light shine. Please help us to do all we can so the children
will grow up with these beautiful intentions and truly be the
salt of the earth. Amen.
