Reformation Lutheran 1997 Lenten Devotional - Number 3
February 14, 1997. Today's Bible verse is Philippians 2:5-11
Be a Giver
Jesus as our Savior, has given us an example for our life with him and each other. Our
life with Christ is his grace of faith for our salvation. Without the good news we have no
hope. He come as our servant, so that we should have hope. Similarly, by example, he
showed us how to treat one another.
Through his example we should seek to be servants to one another, not only when its
easy but especially when times are difficult. Serving one another requires not just
addressing physical needs but also nurturing the spiritual needs of each other. Following
Christ's examples requires taking chances, being uncomfortable, trying new opportunities.
Trying new things in physical and spiritual service to each other is a large objective
during these times of change and speed. But we need to recognize the opportunities during
the everyday issues of life and the extraordinary. Take a chance to serve, just as giving
gifts, the giver receives more than the receiver, it all starts with the giver.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the service of your Son
for my salvation. Help me to recognize and art to serve through his example, and forgive
me as I fall short of Christ's gift. As I serve the physical needs of others, bring the
Holy Spirit to serve their spiritual needs as well. Through Jesus' service we pray. Amen.
